Activity Support Worker – Canada Summer Jobs

Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Team Lead, Recreation Programs and Recreation Therapist, the Activity Support Worker plays a key role in delivering engaging, community-based and on-site recreation programs for individuals living with acquired brain injury. This position is responsible for planning and leading group activities that promote participation, social connection, and overall well-being. 

Working closely with Community Living & Access Assistants and Recreation Therapists, the Activity Support Worker supports the development and implementation of recreation and leisure programs tailored to client needs and interests. The role involves facilitating group activities, supporting individual client participation, and ensuring programs are delivered in a safe, inclusive, and positive environment. 

The Activity Support Worker also contributes to the coordination of recreation services, including scheduling, transportation arrangements, and administrative support. By helping to create meaningful and engaging experiences, this role supports ARBI’s mission of empowering clients to live active and fulfilling lives within their communities.

Key responsibility areas: 

Program Planning & Facilitation 

  • Assist in the development of recreation programs for both groups and individual clients  
  • Plan and implement group activities in the community and on-site, as directed  
  • Lead recreation and leisure-based programming that supports client engagement and participation  

Client Support & Communication 

  • Supervise and support clients during group activities and community outings  
  • Liaise with Community Living & Access Assistants and Recreation Therapists regarding client progress and any concerns  
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants  

Volunteer Support 

  • Provide training and ongoing support to group volunteers  
  • Support volunteers in effectively engaging with clients during programs  

Coordination & Administrative Support 

  • Coordinate transportation arrangements, including Access Calgary bookings  
  • Carry out administrative tasks to support Recreation Services programs  
  • Assist with scheduling, planning, and general program coordination  

Safety & Program Support 

  • Ensure clients and volunteers are working in a safe and supportive environment  
  • Identify and report any safety concerns involving clients or activities  
  • Support additional program and operational needs as required 

 

Qualifications 

Canada Summer Jobs Eligibility: 

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment  
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status  
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)  
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada  

 

Role-Specific Requirements: 

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a related program (e.g., Kinesiology, Recreation Therapy, or similar field)  
  • Experience working with individuals with brain injury or neurorehabilitation needs is an asset  
  • Demonstrated competence in group facilitation  
  • CPR and First Aid certification (current or willingness to obtain prior to start date)  
  • Ability to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check  
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle  
  • Valid vehicle insurance with a minimum of $2 million liability coverage (business use required)  

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements 

This role may involve working in emotionally or physically demanding environments depending on program activities and client needs. Occasional lifting may be required. Driving is required as part of this role.

Social Worker (1.0 FTE Fixed Term)

Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Social Worker works directly with clients and families to provide information, education, and guidance on matters related to legal resources, housing, finances, mental health, addiction, and community supports. This role plays an important part in delivering client-centered care through psychosocial assessments, therapeutic support, and system navigation. The Social Worker prepares written reports outlining findings and recommendations, while working closely with an interdisciplinary team to ensure coordinated and effective care for clients and their families. By supporting clients through complex life situations and transitions, the Social Worker helps ensure access to appropriate resources and services, contributing to improved quality of life and long-term outcomes. The successful candidate will also support program development and ongoing service improvement under the direction of the Program Director.

This role is tied to FCSS funding until December 31st with a possibility of extension.

Key Responsibility Areas

1. Direct Client Care & Support – 45%

Responsible for providing direct client services, including assessment, counseling, and therapeutic support to clients and families.

  • Conduct intake and psychosocial assessments
  • Build therapeutic relationships with clients and families
  • Provide orientation, education, and individual and family counseling
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to support client care plans

2. Care Coordination, Systems Navigation & Advocacy – 35%

Responsible for coordinating care and supporting clients and families in navigating complex systems and accessing appropriate resources.

  • Work closely with the psychologist and interdisciplinary team
  • Participate in family meetings and support caregiver groups
  • Liaise with community providers to ensure continuity of care
  • Assist clients and families with guardianship, trusteeship, personal directives, and financial matters

3. Documentation, Administration & Program Development – 20%

Responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, completing reporting requirements, and contributing to program development.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records
  • Complete required reporting, including FSII surveys for Family & Community Support Services (FCSS)
  • Contribute to research and program development initiatives (e.g., caregiver support programs)
  • Participate in ongoing professional development

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Social Work (Master’s preferred)
  • Member in good standing with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)
  • Two to three (2–3) years of related experience; neurorehabilitation experience is an asset
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

The role requires the ability to manage crisis situations and challenging social behaviours due to the complexity of brain injury. There may be a high level of emotional intensity, requiring the ability to effectively support clients and families through complex and sensitive situations. Driving is required as part of this role

Occupational Therapist

Job Type: $39–$42 an hour – Part-time – In-person

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Occupational Therapist plays a key role in supporting adults living with acquired brain injury and stroke through community-based rehabilitation services. This position is responsible for assessing client needs, developing individualized treatment plans, and delivering evidence-informed interventions that promote independence, participation, and quality of life.

Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the Occupational Therapist contributes to meaningful client outcomes by helping individuals build functional skills, navigate daily activities, and achieve personal rehabilitation goals within their home and community environments. This role also supports client and caregiver education, collaborative care planning, and ongoing program development aligned with ARBI’s mission and values.

The successful candidate will contribute to a client-centered rehabilitation approach by fostering therapeutic relationships, advocating for client needs, and supporting innovative community-based programming for brain injury and stroke survivors.

This is a 1-year fixed term contract with a possibility of extension based on funding.

  • Conduct client-centered functional assessments, including standardized testing aligned with organizational protocols
  • Develop individualized, goal-oriented rehabilitation plans for clients recovering from stroke and brain injury
  • Provide occupational therapy interventions that support functional independence and community participation
Direct Client Care & Program Delivery – 30%
  • Deliver one-to-one and group-based rehabilitation sessions in clinic and community settings
  • Design and implement structured rehabilitation programs for clients and support personnel
  • Adapt treatment approaches based on client progress, goals, and changing needs
Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Education & Community Engagement – 30%
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to deliver holistic, person-centered rehabilitation services.
  • Liaise with families, caregivers, and external service providers to support client progress, continuity of care, and successful community reintegration.
  • Participate in client reviews, case conferences, and collaborative care planning discussions to ensure coordinated service delivery.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise volunteers, practicum students, caregivers, and other support personnel, while contributing to community education, advocacy, and professional development initiatives related to brain injury and stroke rehabilitation.
Documentation & Monitoring – 10%
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation, attendance records, and progress tracking
  • Monitor client participation and outcomes to support effective service delivery
  • Prepare timely reports, updates, and recommendations to support client care and program planning

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy and current registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with individuals with neurological conditions, acquired brain injury, stroke, or related rehabilitation settings
  • Demonstrated experience in cognitive rehabilitation, functional assessment, and client-centered goal setting
  • Strong clinical reasoning, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Familiarity with assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and electronic documentation systems is considered an asset
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation may be required
